My Week in San Fran
{downtown Oakland, CA}
…alternative titles for this post include: “What I ate in San Fran” AND “Why don’t I live in San Fran?” (no, seriously, why don’t I live there?)
I fully intended on sharing these pictures while I was still in San Francisco–my apologies–but now that I’m officially back in DC, I’m ready to share all the details. I can’t tell you how good it felt to just get away for week. With wedding planning, some big life changes on the horizon (I will share more details soon!), and balancing a full-time job with this little blog, this was my first real vacation in more than a year and a half.
As is the case with most of my family’s vacations, this one revolved primarily around food. Really, really, really delicious food.
{Brunch at Flora in downtown Oakland}
Unlike my previous trips to San Francisco, the majority of this trip was spent in Oakland (where my older sister lives) and the Berkeley area. There is so much to do, and all of the stores and restaurants are incredibly unique and different. We did end up venturing into downtown San Francisco one day, and also spent another full day visiting Muir Woods and Stinson Beach, which were both beautiful.
Oakland/Berkeley is also great for people-watching, so I did a fair amount of that as well. I’ve always thought that San Francisco was liberal and out-there (part of the reason why I love it), but Oakland/Berkeley takes this concept to an entirely different level. We saw all kinds of characters–including old men dressed in wizard costumes (just walking down the street, nbd) and one lady riding a bicycle in a traditional colonial dress. Too funny.
Check out the pictures below for more details!
{Brunch at Flora: Cornmeal waffle with burrata, roasted strawberries, almonds, and fried basil}
{Brunch at Flora: Confit Pork Shoulder Hash with Gypsy Peppers, Corn, Green Beans, Potatoes, Cherry Tomatoes, Basil, and Poached Eggs}
{Temescal Farmer’s Market in Oakland}
{Muir Woods Park}
{Stinson Beach in Marin County}
{Breakfast at my favorite spot in the Ferry Building: il Cane Rosso}
{Broken Farro Poridge–I could literally eat this every day, and I don’t even like porridge that much}
{Painted Ladies + Alamo Square, San Francisco}
{Golden Gate Bridge}

My favorite city ever. I’m in love. I have had so many wonderful meals there… Check out my blog for future San Francisco eateries. I’m sure there will be some coming soon 🙂

Oh nice! I absolutely adore San Francisco. It is tied with New York City (or possibly my number one!) for restaurant experiences.
Love this! I’m planning to go to SF next year. It’s been 7 years since the last time I went and I can’t wait to visit again. Bookmarking this post with your favorites for sure!
Oh yay!! Email me if you need any more suggestions!
SF is my most favorite place in the world! And my best friend lives in Oakland! So glad to hear you had such a good time!
I love Oakland! Lucky girl. Thanks Joanne!
Love the photos!! My husband and I visited San Fran last year and it was such an amazing city! I definitely want to go back!
P.S. You should come to the NOVA blogger meet up next week with Virginia Bloggers! 🙂
Beautiful photos, love all that fresh produce too! Those cornmeal waffles look delicious and now I’m itching to try to make some myself!
It looks like you had a great time. Aren’t sisters the best!? Those lemons and all that food! So jealous. Vacations that revolve around eating are the best! 🙂
Yeah! It was great to hang out with my sister and brother-in-law, especially since I see them only about twice a year! The food was SO good. I want to go back!
Umm, I wish I lived there too!!
Love this post, your photos and the food!! All incredible. So happy you had a great time, you deserve it! 🙂
You should definitely go to San Fran if you’ve never been! The food is incredible. Thanks so much Tieghan! It was really nice to fully relax for a week–been a long time coming 😉
Lovely photos, looks like a lot of fun!
Thanks Medha!!
Your photos. Wow!!
Like I said — I need you to move there so I can move in with you. 😉
I’m literally ACHING (and yes, totally using literally correctly there!) over these pictures! San Francisco – the whole Bay Area actually – is one of my favorite places on the planet. So gorgeous, so many things to do and see. I love it!
I’ve decided we all need to move to San Francisco (seriously, it is everyone’s fave city) and hang out all the time. Thanks Heather! 🙂
I fully admit that this is weird, but you should know that I have obsessively read all of your travel posts. You’re fantastic at writing these, and you have been to SO MANY of the places on my bucket list! Love your work, as always!
Omg–you’re awesome!!! And I’m totally flattered. I could have gone on and on in this post, but am never sure how they come across (or if people are bored, haha!). Thanks Sarah!
Glad you had such a great trip! I used to live around SF, so seeing your pics brought back some good memories!
I swear everyone has lived in SF at down point–except me. {sigh} Hopefully some day! Thanks Liz!
Your pictures are beautiful, and your trip looked like so much fun! We were just in San Francisco in May and had a great time hopping around the city. Our dinner in Chinatown was probably my favorite meal, but the dining options are limitless — and awesome.
Nice! I love visiting Chinatown, but didn’t end up getting there this trip. There is a great restaurant called the House of Nanking. It’s probably my fave city for food (even more so than NYC)!
What a gorgeous collection of photos – I love the intermingling of the photos of restaurant dishes, fresh produce, landscapes, and cityscapes. This makes me miss CA so much!
Oh thank you!! It makes me miss CA too!
I love SF. I lived in Oakland for 10 years when my kiddos were little. These pics take me right back!
Oooh! So jealous! I hope I make it out there (to live) one of these day. My sister lives in Rockridge 🙂
That photo of you and Nana is so cute!!
Thanks Pips!
Loooooove this post + all your photos! I heart SF so much! So glad you had a great trip!
Awww, thank you! I feel like I have a million more photos from the last few days–there might be a Part 2 coming, haha!
