My favorite links from this past week:
- If this brown butter walnut crumble cake could appear in my kitchen right now, I would be extremely happy.
- Smashed potatoes have just been taken to an entirely new level! Also, why the heck can I never find hatch chiles?!
- Super adaptable coconut curry soup.
- Happiness mantras! What is yours?
- Chocolate and orange is one of my favorite combinations ever, so these cocoa crepes with creme fraiche and mandarin need to happen immediately. [Also, I’ll be sharing an amazing recipe from Sarah’s book soon!]
- This heirloom tomato and carrot soup. The more soups the merrier!
- How to wrap ongiri from one of the best!
- A peek into Ruth Reichl’s new book “My Kitchen Years,” which I can’t wait to purchase.
- I just discovered this fascinating article by the New York Times yesterday, which was ironic given the timing of yesterday’s post on work-life balance.
- My nephew (and sister and brother-in-law) are visiting from out of town next weekend and I haven’t seen him in FIVE MONTHS (aka, since our wedding). He’s basically grown into a mini-human already.
What I was sharing a year ago…
- This Roasted Shiitake and Asian Pear Salad! With a super tasty miso-sesame vinaigrette that can be tossed with just about everything.

Laura thank you for the feature! The tomato carrot soup is truly autumnal. I will miss the tomatoes when they finally resign for the season, but besides cutting them up and enjoying them raw, blending them and drinking them seems a delightful way as well (among every other way imaginable). ♥ Your roasted shiitake and asian pear salad a year ago is divine. I have close to nothing but pear on my mind currently. Happy week to you!
Of course! I loved your soup! Fresh pears might be the thing I most look forward to during the fall. One of my favorite fruits.
Arthur thanks you for the shoutout, he can’t wait to see his favorite auntie!
Thanks for sharing my cake, Laura! It’s a dangerous one 🙂
I loved reading about happiness mantras. I try to live by “it is what it is” because I tend to overthink things and work myself up. Also, the one about comparison being the thief of joy because it’s true! Both things are hard to remember but ring so true for me.
I am absolutely making that cake. I might make it for the family that is coming into town this weekend! Sounds perfect. I definitely subscribe to the “it is what it is” or the “apples vs. oranges” mantra at this point in my life. That quote about comparison is so ridiculously accurate. I prefer to get inspired by work around me, rather than allow it to make me feel inferior! 🙂
Of course! They looked so good!!! Thanks for the hatch chile tip. I’m going to go to my local Whole Foods and see if they still have some.
Thank you so much for including my smashed potatoes! Hatch chiles were at my Whole Foods for a few days and then vanished–this was the first year I’ve been able to snag them at all.
Loved that Times article! As a country we have a lot of progress left to make with work-life balance.
